If you have been told that you have fatty liver, elevated liver enzymes, hepatitis, or possible liver fibrosis, your doctor may recommend a FibroScan. It is a quick, painless and non-invasive test that gives useful information about how stiff your liver is and how much fat may be present.
Unlike a traditional liver biopsy, a FibroScan does not involve a needle or removal of liver tissue. Instead, it uses vibration-controlled transient elastography to measure liver stiffness. It can also provide a CAP (controlled attenuation parameter) score, which helps estimate the amount of fat in the liver.
One important point, however, is that a FibroScan result should not be interpreted in isolation. Your liver stiffness can be influenced by inflammation, alcohol use, congestion and other conditions. Your doctor may consider the FibroScan along with liver function tests, ultrasound, blood tests, medical history and other investigations before deciding what the result means for you.
